I love those fish. I will never have a tank large enough for them, so I have to enjoy them in pictures like these. Thank you for posting those. They DO look very contented and well fed. Glad you have them.

Thanks, the tank is only a 240g but seems to do ok.

Having just had a broken back in my grow out tank I am a little more worried about it but these guys do not spaz out too much so I think they should be fine.

What do you feed them? Their coloring is amazing, my spotted has a dull silvery color. He gets feeders once in awhile but usually feed on massivores.

That is the adult coloration, those 2 spotted gar are 22-24"... they are huge compared to my Florida and Spotted gar, my little guys who are around 10-12" are the same silver color.

They have not seen live food in a long time... it is Massivore a couple times a week and tilapia, shrimp and smelt mixed with some algae pellets the rest of the time (1-2 times a week). Pretty much any frozen I can get cheap at the Chinese market down the street.

those are really beautiful gar. I saw some at the LFS a few weeks ago and really wanted one for my new tank when i get it set up. ( just bough the wood and other supplies to build the stand) and was talking to the girl that works at the LFS about them. She knows that I have a 10" male jag and several other cichlids, She told me the gar would not be a good tank mate to these cichlids in a 135. because the gar would just get beat up. do you keep them with any other tank mates? how big do the Floida spotted gar get? is a 135 too small for them?

The FL Gar you see at the LFS will grow pretty quick to about 10-12", after that they SLOW down. I have a couple that are around 10" and have had them for 2ish years.... In the wild, they can see 24-30" max, I think in captivity you are looking more 18-20", but you are talking YEARS (think 10) to get to that.

Tank mates, the big gar are with 2 "cichlids", and kick the snot out of them once a week. They are big, and the 2 spotted are adults. My grow out tank, I have them with Bichirs, misc bottom dwelling catfish and a fire eel, one thing in common with all the fish, is that they are not real aggressive towards other fish. it makes for a pretty "peaceful" tank.

I am not talking about Jags, or other more aggressive and territorial fish, I do not think they will do good with that type of fish. The Jag will probably kill the gar. I have successfully kept them with a number of cichlids, including pike cichlids, Escondidos (who bred with and did not really care about the gar), etc...

It really depends on your fish, sometimes it can work but more than likely with higher end predators like Jags, Dovi, etc... it will not work out. I am pretty sure misplacedsooner kept his gar with a large community of CA/ SA cichlids with some success.

Thanks for the quick reply. My jag is pretty mean but I think alot of it has to do with the small tank he is in right now. i will see what happens to his attitude when he gets in the 6 foot tank. I dont want to risk the gars life playing lets see what happens.

There are 2 spotted gar, 1 Cuban and 2 Tropical.

The Spotted are easy enough to identify, the Cuban is the olive colored fish and the Tropicals are the mostly black fish.
