Live Aquaria just added another oddball species to their list
http://liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=1029
Think walmart might start selling these along with the Pacus and Red Tail Sharks??

I noticed this on their site as well. Who has room for that?? Let me just get an indoor pool for one, cough up $300 and feed him people I don't like
and yea sounds like something wal-mart would do

hahaha! Yes, a pool would be about the only place. Could you imagine maintaining a pond with one of those bad boys in it??

they are neat...I wonder if it is tiring for him to look pissed off all the time. lol, a face only a mother could love. They really are cool though. Not $300 cool, but neat anyways

Doesn't sound like a fish even an advanced aquarist should have though. How the hell would you catch the thing?? He would eat the freaking net. And you can forget about re-aquascaping the tank!!

$300 at 4" plus... how much food to get him to his full size and then maintain him?? That's one expensive fish!

That would go in a thread about dudes, vodka, or maybe martinis. This is about angry looking fish with teeth from Africa.

Couple things on Hydrocynus spp.
H. vittatus-found fairly easily (during season) online for $60-85ea. I had 5 in my 240g for awhile until I found them to be incredibly slow growing and got bored of them. I had them in FL as well and tried to put Cichla orinocensis with them.....and killed them the next day. Very fragile fish.
H. goliath-very rare in the hobby-prices for juvs are $400+ typically for the real thing. Never seen them in person although Ive seen pix of people's aquariums with them.
There are a couple others that come in randomly-H. forkstalli, etc. There is a very good chance that walmart was not selling these as they are not captively bred. And....they cost more than 4 bucks.
These fish are illegal in TX-unless you have a license.

Hydrolycus vittatus for $ 300 ? geez...I had 2 of Tatauaia before around 7-9" for $ 100 tops each. You can get Vittatus around 3-5" for $ 50-60 usually. They're not as hardy and tought despite their looks.
The tatauaia and the scombs are better choice than the vittatus and they're a lot hardier and not as fragile as the vitts.
Now, hydrolycus Armatus is another story...they're usually about $ 200-300 for a small 2-4". Once they reach about 12" they can go for $ 1000 ish.
They're slow grower that's what command the higher prices.
License ? oops :)
