I got the bug! Sunday, when we were at Haiven's, I fell in love with her little babies. After leaving her house, we went to drop off the donations at ReyRey's and I left with 6 of my own!
They already recognize me as the "bringer of food", lol, so they flock when I walk into the room. Poor things, they act like they're starving all the time. It's funny to see them play, they'll chase each other around and around a fake stump thing and they look like little arrowheads darting around, lmao.
They're in the 20g long for now but they'll move into the 30g when David gets his fish into the 55g. I'd like to let them grow out of the 30g and then put them in a 40g bowfront when the time comes...we'll see.

Here's four of the six I got. The one with the one black stripe, he's the first one we picked. Pickle wanted to name him "Sharky" but I think we're going to expand that and name him "Killer" after Orcas because he has a monstrously tall fin for his little body, lol. I don't know what we'll do if he is actually a she...
The one on the far right is Pickle's. It has two black stripes in it's top fin and it's a piggy little thing. If there is any sign of food, you can be that one has found it!

Sorry about the copyright and all that, it's required at some of the graphic forums I member at and I wanted to share the pic there too. What's neat to me, is the little shadow on the wall.

Anything I need to know about these guys? My daddy had them when I was little but I've never had any of my own.

Misti, even though I have been in the hobby many years, now. Angles are my first love. I have raised and breed almost of the feshwater fish, except Africans. Have wholesaled and kept saltwater. Angles will always be my first love, and the fish I have gone back to keeping

Misty, you picked out some great looking babies! The one with the monster fin is awesome! Congratulations!

Thank you!
It sounds like I joined a good circle, lol.

I've always like them but it never occurred to me to have a go at keeping them and I'm glad I have some now. They sit here on the other side of a TV next to my desk and I'm always watching them and their antics. I hardly ever get anything done now! They travel around the tank using the buddy system, there's never one off by itself, and that leads to a rousing chase from other buddy teams. They have so much character and are a big hoot to watch.

Welcome to dfwFB lrw46!

They are beautiful! I love angels myself.
Brandy, they like soft water with pH a little below 7, but my pH is a little higher and mine still do fine.

WHile they prefer a lower ph.... I don't really think it's an issue until you want to breed. Basically they like lots of clean, clean water.

even with a little higher pH, mine still breed. I am trying to get it under 7 though still, just so they are happier. They are my babies, my little puppy dogs :)

Do the eggs hatch at the higher ph?

lellison
02-27-2008, 04:15 PM
no....they get consumed by dad first :( I have yet to catch them right after spawning to remove him. I think mom would take care of them. Maybe when I get the pH down and they spawn again I can remove him or both of them and we will see what happens :)

on the tank set-up and water quality...

lower PH... or around 7... is good for them... they do well for the post part at or around 7 ph...

On the hatching.... I do not test my water for PH.... it is usually around 7 when I do... hatching in the same tank with the parents i a little more difficult then artificially... artificially....just menthane blue....and once they are wriggling... daily water changes........ I make is sound simple...and well it can be once you have done it a few times....but getting to the actually babies free swimming and having good growth....welll that is just a little process you kinda have to figure out...

btw... pretty angels you have!!!

....

If I had a dollar every time I've heard that:p:

yea but seriously I would love to have babies. Some more info: my pair have been spawning off and on for a year or so, maybe a little longer. There for a while they were spawning every 10 days, but lately ( last few months) I have not seen them spawn at all. Granted, I have not been condidtioning them with the food that I had been and their water temp has not been as high. Mom is very protective over eggs when they had them and both parents take care of them...until someone walks into the room. They are in a tank in my bedroom away from traffic, but as soon as I enter, Dad goes straight to the eggs to eat them. I has another pair of angels spawning...but the tank got a horrid case of ich and I couldn't save them. Anyways, I would love to have babies. I think I might move the pair into my 55 with my keyholes. Oh and I have methylene blue and air stone and stuff to raise artificially I've just never been able to remove the eggs before they were eaten

Aw, don't worry about it. You didn't really hijack it, it's all need to know info on my end, I know nothing!

I'll try to get ome pics tonight but they've wisened up a bit. I can't get anymore group shots because now they come to the front and line up all the way across, lol. Smart little boogers!

They're in with the "rainbow" molly and his son for now. I really didn't expect it to go very well because those two boys are more than a handful, but they don't have anything to do with each other. When the Angels move to their own tank, it'll just be them and maybe a small pleco.

OK,,,THAT WAS NOT MY CELL NUMBER.... !!!!!

if I lived my life in fear of people taking advantage of my by posting my cell phone somewhere..I would have severe Social Issues of my own.... so...thanks for the thought...

Ok... on the up and up....

I can help ensure you have babies... ARNOLD has proved invaluable...

set-up a 5 gl or ten gl with a sponge filter... get i going ...keep it up...

start your feeding to help bring on the spawn... place a slate or hard surface for the parents to use to lay eggs... or cut the leaves or leaf off... do this the day after they lay the eggs...or when you see them start fanning the eggs....

80 + degrees in the hatching tank.... methelane blue when you place the eggs in there... airstone underneath or at the bottom edge of the slate or leaf...

about 3 days..you will see wrigglers.... about 6 days...you start doing 50% water changes daily.... start hatching Brine Shrimp around day 5... feed babies 4 times daily... with water changes daily....

keep this up and you will have CHINNGOS of babie....

did I miss something??? hmmm

oh yea... THAT WAS NOT MY CELL PHONE NUBMER!!!!

They look like they are growing really fast. Looks good!

Misty
03-05-2008, 09:27 PM
Thank you!

Some of the bigger ones are growing really fast, especially Killer. Then again, he'd eat 24/7 if I'd just hire a "flake tosser".:rolleyes1:
He's the biggest and the king of the tank, making sure everyone else is exactly where he told them to be, lol.

Bully...

It seems that the big ones are growing faster than the little ones...who are just taking their sweet meandering time about it, lol.

Thank you...I'm in total puppy love with these guys, lol

Isn't there a ph buffer, or doesn't API make a ph down for that?

REYREY
03-06-2008, 03:22 PM
what PH do you have in your Tap water Brandy???

I know sometypes of wood help buffer the ph....

bra8ndy8
03-06-2008, 07:42 PM
I think 8.2 8.3

ElijahTurtle
03-07-2008, 09:07 PM
OK if you want them to spawn on Que. You can do 20-30% W/C with slightly cooler water. Usually this will cause them to spawn the next day.

Brandy if you want to keep angels in a pH that high it will require a long drip acclimation period. It would be easier to add a sufficient amount of drift wood & go with a substrate that will lower your pH like soilmaster or peat moss.

bra8ndy8
03-07-2008, 10:16 PM
I've had angels last a couple months at most......would the driftwood and substrate make a big differnce?

ElijahTurtle
03-08-2008, 12:04 AM
Yeah if you can get your pH dow under the 8.0 mark they should do fine. With both drift wood & a pH negative substrate you should be good. They really start to thrive below the 7.5 mark.

bra8ndy8
03-08-2008, 10:47 AM
Hummmmm I might have to do that with the 75.......but what happens when I do a water change? Do I need to add anything to the tap water?

ElijahTurtle
03-08-2008, 11:14 AM
You shouldn't have to worry about it too much. Typically fish have a harder time adjusting to a lower pH than a higher one, keep the W/C's to 30% or less & you should be fine.

Collect rain water Brandy, it is usually softer and usually has to be warmed to go into our tanks, often times fish are triggered to start spawning by a large rain (cooler water, and more of it) in the wild.

supersmirky
03-18-2008, 04:32 PM
That's great....looks like they "heard" the music for real. They were getting down!
