what are the main difference in the T5 and T8. I am looking at getting a fixture that is a normal output t5 fixture with 4 bulbs for $90. I really dont know the difference between this and the shop light I am currently using. Here is the link to what I am looking at getting. I have been told there is a huge difference. I am alo looking at getting this because I may turn one of my tanks into a saltwater tank. Thanks in advance.

The main difference it the most obvious, a T5 is 5/8" in diameter and a T8 is 8/8" or 1" in diameter.
Another major difference it their efficiencies. The T5 will produce the same if not slightly more light than a T8, but use less energy to do it.
One draw back to T5s over T8s is their availability. There are few places to get T5s locally, however more and more fish stores are carrying them, or you can simply order them off the internet.
May I ask what size tank is this for and what are the future plans for this tank?
That certainly seems like a good deal for that fixture. Very nice looking.

How big is your tank ? how deep is your tank ? when you do have a saltwater, what kind of coral are you planning to put in there ?
That light fixture is cheap because it only uses a 28 watts bulbs for 48" length. I am assuming you have a 55 or 75 or 90 gallon tank minimum siince you're looking at a 48" light fixtures.
I can tell you with only 112 watts total, you won't be able to keep any corals alive, even a soft corals.
My Fish only tank is a 20 gallon, I have 2 - 24W bulbs and my small leather frag is not even growing.
If you are converting to Salt with Corals, look into 4 bulbs configuration with at least 54 watts per bulb.
