Has anyone ever kept them? I have read everything on the internet I can find about them, I was just curious to see of anyone had experienced them and had a comment about their aggression. I read that it is nothing like a convict, but may still be too aggressive. NOt sure, thats why I'm asking:). I'm wondering if they would be too aggressive for keyholes I suppose. Thanks in advance

I have kept them and I would not recommend that you keep them with your keyholes. They are not as agressive as convicts but they will domminate yout tank. If you wind up with a pair everything in your tank will be beat up when she has fry.

Thank you! I was kind of thinking that, but thought I would see. Thanks so much!

What about Geophagus jurupari or Blue acara?? I want something different with some color in my tank. Geophagus jurupari would tear up my tank though I think
my son has a blue acara (Big Chief Okanawa)- he's cool. After Peanut, he's probably my favorite fish in the house- but he's BIG compared to Keyholes. I'd be slow to put those two together. But he does just fine with th barbs and Kribensis I have in there with him.

yea, my keyholes are like 3" right now, what do the blue acaras get? 6+?
that's probably what Logan's is right now. He has that, a Nicaraguan (5") and a couple tiger barbs and the krib pair in his 50g. But the Blue will approach the glass if you walk by- he's real curious. Good colors too.

Funny that you say that about HRP's. They have a new name by the way now....Amantitla is the new genus. Dont remember the species name.
I had some a long time ago that were wild-probably 1997 ish and then had more in 2001. They were not very aggressive at all and I kept them with tetras as dithers in a 30g long when they were breeding.

Oh really? I think the HRP's are beautiful fish. Do you think that they would be okay with my keyholes?

In a large enough tank-yes. 45g or bigger would be best in my opinion. Any breeding cichlid can be difficult in tight quarters.

My tank is 55g. Perhaps I will give it a try. If it doesn't work out I can always rehome them. thanks!
