Is any fresh water sand good for Discus? I am barely going to start using sand instead of gravel and I'm buying the sand from someone on here but want to make sure that for Discus I need something special since I know how sesitive they can be and they are not a cheap type of fish I can afford to lose for taking my chances.

Many discus keepers have a sand substrate. In the wild they blow the sand to find food.
I've used the expensive sand from pet stores and known others that used pool or play sand.

Tell us a little more about what you're planning to do. Tank size? Filtration? Age of Discus? How many? Tankmates?

Size if tank is 75 gallon. I have a regular HOB filter for now that's rated for a 100 gallon tank. 7 Discus at about 6 inches. Don't know what tank mates to put them with. I'm trying to do sand and drift wood and some fake plants. They are about 11/2 to 2 years old according to whom I bought them from.

Because of the frequent water changes that Discus need, many people do bare bottom tanks.
