One of those Mexican Mollies has popeye (but it's improving) and I was told that I needed to add salt to the tank but I don't know if it's good for everybody or the plants. I don't have another tank to put him in so I need to treat the whole tank anyway.

I have that Dr. Well Fishes aquarium salt for freshwater aquariums but I need to know if everyone can handle it.
The tank houses the Bol.Rams, Emerald Corys, those Mollies, two ABN, Neon Dwarf Gouramis, two Neons and Red Eye tetra. I have too many plants to name but they're all pretty common plants I guess. I'm not as worried about the plants as I would be about killing fish.

Would you add it? Would salt be better that other chemicals?

And for those reading this, I have done a 25% water change, the filter's been changed and the water is balancing out nicely.

I use salt in my 135. I don't measure... Just a few sprinkles from one end of the tank to the other when I do a water change. I have loaches and I've since read that salt is a no no with them, but they don't seem bothered by it. Doesn't really seem to affect the plants.

Thanks...
I'm really nervous about adding it. I don't know if I will or not, I know things can go very wrong. If I do, I don't plan on adding 20 tspns, I can tell you that!

Mollies are one fish that can go from freshwater to saltwater, so it's not going to bother them. I've got cories in that tank as well as neons and BNs, and they do fine with the salt. Not sure about the rams and gouramis.

What I have done when a molly shows signs of distress is to put her in the iso tank and add a pinch of salt. I say her because it's usually after they've had babies. I had one molly (the one that had 90 fry) that I thought I'd lose, but she pulled through and is keeping up with the crowd. Rest and salt did the trick.

mollies will do fine in salt...you can actually over a long time convert a mollie to saltwater completely.

All of your tetras varietys are very touchy when it comes to salt.

I am not sure about the other breeds either.

use the salt only AFTER YOU FRY THE FISH!!! is add taste... very good MMMHMMMM

jk... a little salt never hurts.....just don't over do it... it starts building up in the tank and you cannot remove it!!!

Thanks everyone. I knew the Mollies would like the salt, it was mainly the Gouramis, Corys and Rams that I didn't know would or not.

ReyRey, there are days when I could...;)

I use Epsom salt to treat bloating for my Frontosa.

Well, I added some, not anywhere near what they suggested. The Mex. Molly with the popeye now has it in his other eye, while the first eye is clearing up. He's on the bottom but I think it's just because he can't see squat. When I just fed, he came up rather eagerly and skimmed the surface for food.

Why is it some fish just seem sickly all the time, he's the same one that had all the problems when they were in the 20g? I really hope we don't lose him, Pickle is so upset!

I use good 'ole fashion rock salt in both of my tanks. I don't measure.

I have africans and Clown loaches... they are doing great and the water has a nice fishy piss and poo taste but now with a salty twang.

I used it in my planted and did not have any problems, I have used it with all the fish you have and no problems.

And it is helps snail control...

Thanks everyone. I knew the Mollies would like the salt, it was mainly the Gouramis, Corys and Rams that I didn't know would or not.
