Hello Fellow Fish Lovers,
First,I would like to Thank Misty and David for inviting me to this group. I had no idea such a place existed. I appreciate the acceptance here and will try to be a good member.

Secondly,these 2 members saw my ad on craigslist for help getting fish for my grandbabies. It has been almost a year since my quest began for a tank/fish for them,,and once I thought I had it but the following ensued,as posted on barter on CL:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lesson in Bartering-June 12 2007
I realize this will get flagged,yet I hope it remains long enough for the elderly or those new at bartering such as me, to read. Recently "bartered" my fairly new Samsung Camera Cell Phone with accessories for a 30 gallon fish tank with accessories. This idea came to me regarding my 7 years old and under grandchildren who have recently lost their father.
Tank had a cleverly disquised 6 inch crack in corner,,filter pump does not work,,oxygen tubing motor is non working and 2 of 4 corners had been 'repaired'. All this was obvious I guess to those who had better sight. The tank is worthless as are the accessories. Person stated "working condition with no cracks or leaks". I took their word. It's a shame a person's word does not represent as it did in the old days.
This is obviously my fault for trusting,not having tested the access., or having someone else examine the trade before they walked out the door with my $140 value merchandise. I won't file small claims or name names as this is worthless as well.
Just a note to the fine folks on Craigslist,,Please examine your barter closely. God Bless,Grandmother in Arlington.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So,just a month ago I was finally able to get a 20 gal tank with accessories in exchange for my 19" color TV,,for my Grandchildren. My Grandson,8yrs old now, has been raised around my old 20gal tank/fish since a baby, yet I had to leave it behind when my home was foreclosed on. I left the filter/o2/light and pump on and had fed them before locking the door for the last time in my home.
(I pray someone took them and took care of them).:confused:

My grandbabies lost their dad last April,,I moved in with my Daughter in June. The quest began for a tank for them. So here I am,,was/am trying to barter a few Fiesta ware dishes on CL yet again, for some fish.:wha:

I was able to purchase 2 small red blacktail swords,,the boy is alive and doing well,the girl jumped out of the tank and was recovered 3 days later,sort of mummified. Being on SS I cannot afford to buy anymore fish and it was my hope the 2 would make babies and fill the tank.:confuzeld:

Well, I reckon you all didn't want to now all of this,,hahaha..I am quite honored to be here and hope I can help others. However,,my self-taught knowledge of medicines-at the displeasure of a few fish-is limited.

Thank you for having me,
God Bless,
Grandma Mel

welcome....keep an eye on the "freebies" area or maybe even post a wanted ad for any extra fish someone might have.

Many people on this forum breed intentionally or accidently and don't mind giving a few fish away here and there.

Welcome Grandma Mel! That is terrible what happened to you! Could you tell us what all you need? All I have is African Cichlids, which would be too difficult to care for, but I might have some supplies stored you could use.

You're very welcome! I'm glad to see you made it over...

CL is a great place, I've done my fair share of CL-ing but honest people are hard to come by over there. I'm sorry you've been taken, it's not a good feeling and it just puts a raincloud over the excitement of finding treasures.

Make sure to tell us what all you have for the tank, we'll see what we can do for you. We're a whole group of friendly, honest people and I'm sure you'll have a great time here.

I have several different kinds I can part with for a good cause such as this!!

Hello Again Ladies and Gentlemen,

Wow, I had no idea I would be welcomed in such a fine fashion,,and so quickly too.

Please forgive me for not checking back sooner. Honestly, I just woke up,,off day,,and had not checked back yet. My Grandson is home from school now,,I really should have taken the time to check in yet one of my heart medicines makes me sleepy when my blood pressure is high. I guess it was today because I slept most of the day.

Your replies are most appreciated,,,if you have some fish that perhaps you could part with,,it would be a GodSend to us.Literally as I believe the Lord works through others to help children. My Grandson, Callan, is beginning to understand death-which is quite sad for me to see him exposed to this at such a young age.

If I could, I would move Heaven and earth for my grandbabies. Their needs ,,either physically,financially or emotionally, are my priority. If I have to sell everything I own or barter whichever to meet their needs,, I am not above begging for them if required.

Well, I'm not a fish expert by any means,,whatever you fine folks think will do. I dont know which fish are able to be combined. Whatever you come up with is more than appreciated. I have the Tetra food,,the chlorine water conditioner but thats it. The tank is on an old end table in the hallway,,I left the stand at my home as I didn't want to leave them on the cold floor.

The tank has gravel,a filter(Top Fin) and one o2 tubing with a stone on it. I dont have a heater,which maybe they wont need?

Words cannot express my gratitude for the many kind replies and offers here. I am not by nature a taker but a giver,hence wanting to trade something I have in exchange for fish. If those who would like to donate-for lack of a better word-please let me know what kind of things you like. I may have it in my storage.
Thank you all so very,very much on behalf of my grandbabies. You are most welocme to come to our home and see the tank.
God bless you and yours,
Grandma Mel

Welcome G-Ma Mel.

What part of Arlington do you live. I live in Mansfield and could help facilitate the delivery of some items donated.

I unfortunately have fish too aggressive for your needs, but will help in any way I can. I'm in outside sale, therefore I am all over the metroplex, and again can help in the delivery.

Hello Everyone,

I live in South Arlington,,,on Sublett between Cooper and Matlock. That would be an amazing blessing if you could sort of round up the free fish and deliver. I am partially disabled from a spinal injury and do not drive. My Daughter does my errands for me,,maybe she could meet and receive some of your kind offers?

Either way,you all are an amazing group of folks. You generosity have touched my heart. That you would go out of your way,,give of what you have and even offer to deliver,,well it's just an answer to prayer.

Please let me know what I can do to help you help my Grandbabies. The 1yr old calls the boy fish "ishy",,,so I am excitred to see her smile when she see's more than 1 ishy. :)

God bless you and yours,
G-Ma Mel (that is so cute!)

Well, big welcome to the site G-Ma Mel!!!

It looks like you can literally take your pick of what fish you keep in the 20 gallon. I guess at this point it's up to you to decide which you like best. I'm going to assume since you previously had livebearers (Mollies, Platys, and/or Guppies) that is what you're looking for in this case. I'm sure most will agree that if you're pretty new to fish or trying to keep things simple in the tank, that livebearers are definitely a good what to go.

Just to help keep track, from what I read you have the following equipment:
*20 gallon tank
*gravel
*HOB filter (HOB = hang on back)
*Air Hose with stone

You have an end table in which the tank is currently sitting, but a stand would be nice ;). Are you confident the end table can support the tank's weight (about 200 pounds when full)?

Heaters aren't 100% necessary, but a nice thing to have if the water temp dips too low or if the fish get sick. Does the tank have a thermometer? Normally the thermometer will be a black strip stuck somewhere on the outside of the tank, or it might be a somewhat normal looking thermometer with a suction cup.

I have an entire box (or two) full of plastic decorative plants and rocks; plus a heater or two that I'm more than willing to give to you. I have some fish as well that you're welcome to, but they're not livebearers (mine are tetras which are just as hardy and easy to care for as livebearers).

Does the tank have lights?

Does the tank have glass tops?

Do you have a “Python” water changing tubing?

What size is the filter? Does it have any numbers on it or a model number listed?

I assume you have an Air Pump for the air hose and stone?

Does anyone see something I left out?

Grandma Mel - we're honored to have an oppertunity to help a fellow fish lover with such a nobal cause. It is definitely our pleasure to lend a hand (or fish :D).

And please let us know if you need anything, even besides fish ;).

And while I'm thinking about it... you can take as much or a little time as you want or need to reply to the responses. These threads/posts aren't going anywhere unlike CL.

The only other thing I can think of is a breeder basket for keeping fry. Fry will happen and the grandbabies probably don't need to see life one minute and death the next. I would imagine that she'd like to avoid that conversation with them if at all possible.

I might have one but I have to look before I swear to it.

my house can be the drop off zone or I can meet some of the folk that live NORTH of us...

I can deliver the items and help ensure the tank is set-up with the necessary items...

I agree with Andrew and Reyes. Lets compile a list of what she has vs. what she needs/ wants.
After this is complete, we can worry about the delivery of the donated items.

I will have a little time this weekend to help in the delivery process so lets get on this.

Hello Fellow Fishies,:hehe:

Wow,,I am so touched by all of your kind offers.

To help you better help my grandbabies,,I will try to answer questions,,and of course,any day of the week to deliver is more than ok with me. I am always here.:)

1."Does the tank have lights?"
Answer: Yes and no,,it did come with the tank top but the 6" bulb is out. I have a floursesant light sitting on top of it right now until I can purchase a bulb.

2."Does the tank have glass tops?"
Answer: Yes,it does. A pane of glass within the black top.

3."Do you have a “Python” water changing tubing?"
Answer: Umm,not sure what this is?? If it is the 'suckie tube' that takes water out of the tank,,no.(I use a tea pitcher but this would be nicer?) :confuzeld:

4."What size is the filter? Does it have any numbers on it or a model number listed?"
Answer: The filter is a 'Top Fin', has a white bag I fill with charcoal. Size,let me go take a look...ok this is right from the box(came with the tank)"For Top Fin Power Filters 20,30,40 and 60" I don't see any numbers on the hanging part but then my granddaughter has -displaced-my glasses.roflmao

5."I assume you have an Air Pump for the air hose and stone?"
Answer: Yes,the air pump appear to be working properly. The stone is about 6-7",,sort of like a bar.

6."Does she have a net?"
Answer: Yes,a small net came with the tank.

7."Does she have a "Fry Basket?"
Answer: This made me smile,,,I guess not as the only Fry Basket I know of is the kind french fries are served in at Box Burger.:hehe: If this is something you put baby fish in,the answer is no. I didn't know there was such a thing but This would keep the adults from eating the little ones?

I hope I have given a better idea to you kind folks of what I have and what is needed? I have no chemicals besides the Tetra Fish Food and the H20 conditioner. Ick chemical would be appreciated,,I remember having this before.

The gentleman whom I traded with included fish plants and rocks and I had found a rather large aquarium "Colaseum" (sp) by the apt dumpster someone had thrown away. My Daughter disliked my getting it from the dumpster but the way I see it is I needed it,,The good Lord provided it,, so I took it. (of course I cleaned it).:D

Well,it's the kiddo's bedtime and I go to bed when they do these days. Please accept my apology for answering you sooner. Sunday would be fine,,we are home from Church around 12-12:30,,,so anytime after that we will all be home.

Oh,and I guess "live breeders" are what we like?

God bless,protect and prosper each of you,
G-Ma Mel;)

Good Morning Fellow Fishies,,

I let Callen read this site,,,he was laughing and clapping when he realized you all were doing this for him...I can't Thank You all enough for bringing excitement and anticipation into this home. He needed this...and I Thank Each Of You from the bottom of my heart.

Please let me know what each of you like or collect. I have a lifetime's worth of things in my storage as it would not fit in my Daughter's apartment. Some things I have:
old avon still full of perfume(s)
candles
Vision cookware set-used but still functional
George Foreman grill-again used but clean and working
of course the 2 sets of Fiesta cup/saucers
a small computer stand
and many other things that you may like.

If you have children,,I have VHS tapes of "Barney" and lots of movies. It seems the newest thing is the disks,,but I dont have those,,we still use the VCR.:hehe:

Please,let me know what I can do for you. If you would like to make a list on this site what everyone likes,,I can dig thru my junk,,er..things and see what I have. (it's junk to me but others may like it).

Oh,,the tank did come with a therostat and I believe the table is sturdy enough.

My goodness,,,I am truly astonished at you all. Words just don't express my appreciation for what you are doing for my grandbabies. And my gratitude.

God Bless Each of You,

Hello Fellow Fish Lovers!

Please forgive me for my absence (more on that later) and Thank you to all who gave so generously for my grandbabies.:)

Rey-Rey came over Monday night,a few weeks ago now,and brought all your wonderful fish and supplies! My, I was so surprised by you all graciousness...how can I ever repay your kindness,thoughtfulness and just plain 'ol goodness?

Rey, according to my 26yr old daughter "was the bomb":hehe: ,,,my grandson slam-dunked him with many questions in which he was delightful and patient in answering,,,My 1 yr old granddaughter gave him the normal 'frown' which she does all strangers at her age,,yet Rey-Rey's gentleness with children soon penetrated her fear and she smiled at him after a bit. HAH! I believe children can sense a person's spirit,,she had nothing to fear.

The fish were and are Marvelous!! The supplies were awesome and just what I needed. They are doing great,,getting fat and warming up to each other quite well. ( I will load some pics soon of the tank/grandkids/fish).

The following Wednesday after Rey-Rey brought the fish,I began to feel weak,nauseated and had a strange heaviness in my chest which continued until Sunday when it became unbearable. Amanda took me to the ER and my cardiac enzymes were off the chart-I was having a heart attack. After the cath lab and insertion of 2 coronary artery stents, I was in ICU for 4 days.
These are the medicine stents as I understand.

Anyway, I wanted to pop i for a minute,I'm up today and feeling better,, and give a BIG "Thank You",,and by all means,,let you know I didn't "take the fish and run". roflmaoI very much appreciate the kindness shown my grandchildren and the joy the new fish are bringing them. Their smiles and laughter,,their excitement every day,,and their pleasure is good medicine to my heart. (Way better than the Plavix and other meds)

I will be back to post later when I'm a bit stronger,, Thank You All so very,very much!
God Bless You All,
G-Ma Mel

Yes, very good to hear from you!!!

Take it easy, and get well soon. DO NOT OVER EXTEND YOURSELF... you must listen to what your doctor(s) say and do what they tell you ;) (as I'm sure you will :D)

Greetings & Salutations Dear Fish Friends!

Please accept my sincere apology for taking soooo long to reply after you all's generous donated fish for my grandkids. I was in ICU for a bit,,2 stents placed in my decending coronory artery,,titrated multiple meds for heart rate and blodd pressure and am just now feeling like my ol self. :-)
(please excuse mistyped words,my granddaughter sat on my glasses and one side is gone so I type without them these days. roflmao

On to the fish.......how grateful I am for each single donated fishy. ReyRey brought over a gorgeous large colorful big guy-but he del=veloped popeye in one eye then the other and I could not afford meds,,nor to see him suffer-so I removed him...sadly.

As for the 2 small silver fish,,I took pics and will try to upload them to the site,,they were about 3/4",,now they both are a good 3-4" each. In Fact. I believe big momma is laying eggs?? as she hangs out in one corner in a vertical position and big daddy soort of sweeps over where she was with that beautiful gold tail of his. Perhaps ferminting the eggs? wrong word I'm sure :).

The other orange fish are great,,had babies and I used the FRY basket-first wexperience with this- but only 1 of 5 survived,so I must have done something in error. Also a pic of the survrving bay about 3/4" long right now.

The algae eater/sucker thingy---Oh My! HUGE guy,,about 5" long,,hides from the light so was not able to get a snap of him. BIG GUY...hahahaha,,,he is the kiddo's fav but they dont get to se him oftewn as he hides inside the colluseum(sp) thing.

I will now try to upload the few pics I took so you all can see your babies are doing well...Thank you so very much for your donations. God bless you all and I will be back.-Love,G-Mel. :-)

So sorry to read that some people have absolutely no moral compass by which they navigate life. Your original post broke my heart. I'm glad that you found the site and that you are enjoying your fish tank!

I wasn't here til last summer, so I wasn't aware of any of what has happened until now. I am glad to hear that you are feeling better and that your grandkids are enjoying the fish. I live on the east side of Fort Worth, so if there is anything I can help you with, just let me know. Hope you have a very merry x-mas!
