I've been having problems with introducing new fish into my tank, and I'm really frustrated need help because I want to be able to add more fish. How long should I wait to introduce new fish after changing the water? If I do frequent water changes, how long does it take nitrates to go down to a good/normal/healthy level? When you dechlorinate water for the fish tank, does it matter how long the dechlorinated water has been sitting out for? What are some other ways that would help to keep nitrate/algae levels down in between cleanings.

Alot of variables.
Age of aquarium.
Type of aquarium. (plants, fish only)
How often do you feed/ how much is each feeding?
How big and vigorous are your cleanings/ water changes?
Aquarium size/ inhabitants.

The aquarium has been up and running since maybe September. Has fish. Introduced a floating plant about a week or so ago but had to remove it because it looks as if it has eggs on it. I feed every other day, about a pinch. I hate to admit this, but we aren't consistent on our water changes/cleanings and only do them when they are needed. We have two platies, one ghost shrimp, and one snail.

You should do water changes on a regular basis, before they are needed, not when they are needed. I change water in my tanks at least once a week, some more often than that. My guess is you're having water quality issues.
