They spend more money on species as well. Most amazon rare fish exporter gives the asian and european buyers first take on species selections, whatever is left is being ship to the US.

I've been asking this forever now.

US aquascaping is lagging more and more behind other countries. I attribute that to the different sensitivity we have as a whole.

Also it's about conformity. If you watch a documentary on how this same Japanese contest is judged you will see things that you will find close to repulsive. In our culture individualism is the rule. In that contest it's all about showing that you are part of the group. The way the judges say things is one thing on hand. But the contestant called on stage and put in the spotlight often act little guilty children.

I'm not being negative about this contest. Because at the end - we see what we see - gorgeous aquascapes that I personally cannot even understand how a person can conceive. Some are plain stupid (#1 is a good example). But some are out of this world with their complexity and attention to detail.

One thing that I really really don't understand is the high placement of Russian and Ukrainians guys. Because of the mentaility and culture in those countries. Could very well be these 2 guys have some advanced degrees in art.
