i think he is anyways, the female is gone, he beat her to death and from what i've read that's not uncommon once she lays eggs, he'll run her off or kill her...anyways, is there anything that he can get along with?

thanks:rolleyes:

if i lift the hidey rock he's been guarding, will i mess up the eggs if there are any? will i be able to see them? what do they look like? i put a natural sea sponge in there too...

I'll put this as delicately as possible, but since these 2 threads pretty much mirror each other and are both about pretty much the same thing I merged them. It's better to have all your information in one thread instead of spread throughout several.

makes sense to me.

Just letting you know.

FYI I won't be qualifying everything I do, so just a heads up. :)

He's just saying that he's not gonna explain himself everytime he merges a thread or something. He's just gonna do his "job".

Sorry, I spoke for ya Skipp :flipa:

By what I know, it isn't uncommon for a male convict to kill anything in the tank once eggs have been laid.

So to answer your first question...no, there is very little that will be able to live with him in a tank unless the tank is 6 foot or longer.

i sure ain't gonna let him kill off anybody else, if i can help it!
i'll never forget the poor female, totally raggedon both sides, unable to swim or keep balance, just pathetic...since then i've learned about putting them down with clove oil and freezing them, didn't know much about humane fish euthanasia but now i do. guess it's a step forward, even if it is sad.:o

well, one of my convicts laid eggs. :D here are some pics. the adjacent wall has a load more eggs on it. I took everyone out except mom. What im wondering is how can I know if the eggs are fertile? and if so how long until they hatch? should i take mom out?

i am noticing this morning that some of the eggs have little black dots, I guess those dots are the fish? I also notice little white things moving around on the glass. the white things are about a millimeter in length and move the full length of the glass, they are pretty quick, and they dont leave the glass. Im thinking that it is some sort of bug. but so small, i doubt i can get pictures. what might they be?

the black dots in the eggs mean fish. if they're infertile, the parents will probably eat them within a few days.

well this morning i can see that many more of the eggs have black spot visible. there are also some that turned completely white. have they gone bad? should i remove them? how can I remove them when they are in the middle of a large egg mass?

you can pick the bad eggs off with a toothpick.

well yestrday when i got home most of the eggs had hatched. some were in the process of hatching, and the rest hatched within an hour or 2 later. out of god knows how many eggs ( at least a hundred) 10 didnt hatch. themale is still in there and doing a pretty good job keeping the fry together. :D thanks all for your help. Ill probably being getting rid of some of these soon.

GRats on the babies ... you'll soon find yourself knee-deep in convict fry!

Did you ever find out what those other bug-things were?
