View Full Version : Snow Oscar
I wanted to post pictures of my baby snow oscar. He was a gift from a friend in Waco about a month ago. I had never seen this variety before, but after researching a bit online, I see that they're sometimes referred to as "platinums." The shop where he came from had a whole tank of them, and it was labeled "Snow Oscar." I started out calling him "Blizzard" but he ended up being called "Babe," because he's pink and eats like a pig. So, Babe it will be. He's really interesting in that he has no black pigment like my other lutino oscar (Gavin, veiltail). Babe has the tinest edge of orange on his tail and a remnant of an orange spot where the ocellaris would normally be. He is almost devoid of markings, and a snowy white. It will be interesting to see what markings he acquires as he matures. I'll try to post pictures as he grows. He is still in my larger QT tank, and will be moving to a temporary outdoor pool to grow all summer. Then, come fall, we'll try to introduce him to Gavin, my other oscar.

I have to tell you that after reading several posts about your Oscars, I want one! You really made me want one! My husband and I are in the process of getting the set-up ready. Yay!

And your baby is beautiful!
Thanks, Kimert! As much as your family enjoys fish, I think you should have an oscar. They are so pet-like. Gavin (female veiltail) watches TV at the end of her tank and plays with a ball! It's a riot to watch. I love many different kinds of fish but I just have to always have an oscar. They truly know different people. Strangers can walk up to Gavin's tank and she just eyeballs them. If my husband or I walk up to her tank, she just goes wagging bananas! And there's not much cuter than a baby oscar. I really enjoy watching them grow up. I think you should do it. ;)

That is exactly what solidly convinced me after reading some of your other posts about how your oscars behave. So we are definitely doing it! :D Sorry to ask a question in your post but I can't PM yet. Is a 55 gallon big enough with a canister filter for one Oscar if we do twice a week water changes? We are considering have 2 55gallons (one on either side of our tv) and have one oscar in each. We want to make sure this is ok though.

Very sweet fish....I have never seen an Oscar of that variety before. Can't wait to see what he looks like in the next set of shots!

55 would be plenty big enough for starting out a couple of Oscars. One in each would work out just fine for a good while. They won't reach the size of a dinner plate for a couple years so I would say you would be good to go.

Beautiful oscar Oowl! He/she is very cute! Reminds me a lot of my Fender when he was a baby. :) Can't wait to watch this lil one grow!
kimert if I were you starting out I would go with the largest tank size you can that way you wont have to worry about an upgrade later, especially if you are designing your living room around them.

What is the recommended tank size for 1 full grown oscar? I realize the bigger the better but what is the minimum size that will make a full grown oscar happy? I just want to have all of my information before we move forward. (Oowl - I feel like a thread stealer! So sorry! :o I still think your baby is beautiful!:))
I grew out two baby oscars in a 58, which was fine for a while. Gavin (the veiltail) is currently in a 100g. I've seen full-grown oscars in a 55 before. They have plenty of room long wise; it's the narrowness of a 55 that's the problem. A better suggestion is a 75 or a 90, which is the same 4' length but wider so they can make that turn easier and keep their fins looking good.
Good luck with your oscar baby project. You're really gonna love how they interact with the family. They simply ADORE food and will take it directly from your hand. I had to quit that because Gavin started "thanking" me by giving the water a tail swat, totally drenching me during feedings. So, now I quick drop food on the opposite side of the tank he's on and slam down the lid before he can make it over there and get me! roflmao
I'll post pictures of Babe as he grows. I hope he stays completely white. I think it looks really neat.
Hey, Gina, you're in Saginaw? I'm by Willow Creek Park. PM me next time you're in the neighborhood and you can come visit the oscars!

I've been picking through the Oscar Spot (I recommend it) and they say that a happy healthy Oscar needs a 75 minimum. I got my very first Tiger Oscar last week and named her Ziggy. She is a real cutie! She's currently in an 80 and I have plans to bump it up to 120 next fall.
