I bought a few yesterday from a lfs. My thinking was to use them in my L46 tank and for the apistos. Do I need to prepare the leaves in any way? How much of should I use per gallon?

no preparation just drop them in, depending on how brown you want the color of the water but id say 1 leaf per 10g is fine.

How much of should I use per gallon? How many to use depends on the size of the leaves. I bought the extra large grade AA leaves from Amy Lim in Singapore. They are approximately 10 inches long x 6 inches wide. I use one leaf in a 20 gallon with my Triple Red Apistos (in tank) and two in my 40g Discus tank (in Aquaclear filter). I also have 2 leaves rolled like cigars, placed in a mesh bag, and submerged in my treated WC barrels. They're similar to using Barley in a pond, as they slightly tint the water like tea.

Soak them in a 5 gallon bucket first, after a day or two, take the leaves out and use that water for your tank. If you leave the leaves in the tank, they'll eventually crumbled down and get suck up to your filter and clogging up your pump.

By using a "blackwater extract" you can determine on how much tanning that you want your tank to have

Dosage
Dosages below are based on 15-25 cm (6-10 in) leaves. If your leaf is smaller or bigger, you need to adjust the figures accordingly.

Using 2 leaves per 50 L (13 us gallons) of water is a good rule of thumb, but be prepared to adjust the dosage to suit your particular fish. Some Betta keepers routinely use up to 2 leaves per 15 L (4 us gallons) of water in their everyday tanks.
Betta breeders normally use 1 leaf per 20 L (5 us gallons) of water in breeding tanks.
In fry rearing tanks, use 1 leaf per 40 L (10 us gallons) of water.

I wonder if they can see the fish?

I buy Almond leaves in bulk from Amy Lim in Singapore. I keep bagged leaves in my discus water-change barrels and make leaf piles in my apisto tanks.

Here's a link to Amy's eBay store.

PS: Fish Gallery sells Almond leaves. Not sure if DNA does.

Thanks Jim, you always come through. I called a couple of places....nada. Fish Gallery was too busy with customers to check, so I placed my order with Amy for some of her grade A+ leaves.

condition water, lower ph, stimulate breeding in some species. As to the previous ?'s the ones I got from a lfs weren't that great. I think I have some more that I had gotten from Jim (I think) that I haven't used yet. I want to try alder cones too for my angel breeder tanks
