Are they thick or thin. Three genus that are called 'headstanders' are Abramites, Chilodus, and Anostomus. Take a look on google for these three.

Something else to consider... some barbs will headstand if your nitrates are out of whack. You might want to check that.... just to be sure.

No, from what I read the headstanding indicates stress that is most likely due to water conditions. What are you water parameters? Really need to check that out before assuming this is "normal". You might end up with some pretty but dead fishies.

If you don't have a testing kit... go ahead and do a mondo wanter change and get a kit tomorrow.

I took the time to do a little research and most of the time this behavior was due to stress. They CAN exhibit similar behavior when they are "flirting". But, you said they are being very timid and kinda hiding... that indicates stress. Barbs are not hiding fishies.

maybe they're gonna mate for me?!
i'll be doing the water change though tomorrow cause i'm getting more fishies, zebra danios in the community tank.
sigh.
it never ends!

Better idea... do a 50 % water change and leave the gravel til next time. I got real aggressive on my gravel once and started a mini-cycle. Wait a couple days and THEN vacuum the rest of the gravel.

Sorry... not trying to be pushy but, that's what I would do.

JJ, how many fish do you have in with these guys and what size tank? You mention adding more fish. I'd hold off add more til you have this tank healthy again, which may take a few weeks. Just my opinion. :)
