My kids and I just picked up what turned out to be I believe a 29 Oceanic tank from a freecycler. The stand is the original too (I've had this tank in a previous life!)
Anyway, we are looking at filling it this weekend and we have no lid, or light for it. I am interested in what you all think about lighting on the cheap for this tank.
We are going to have tropicals, probably a community tank (no cichlids), with I hope lots of plants.
My three kids are very excited about having a tank. We have had very small ones years ago. Before our 10 year old was born we kept a great salt water tank, so we are not new at this but very rusty.
Any donations of plants and decorations would be well appreciated. :hehe:

Welcome!!! And congrats on the tank!!! Just a suggestion, but fill it up outside and make sure it doesn't leak. Your floors will love you for it. :)
I recently got a 20 long for my babies and it didn't have a lid with it, but what I'm going to use as a quick fix is eggcrate from Lowes or Home Depot cut to fit. It has holes big enough to put food through and since it's used for lights, my flourescent strip light will be fine on top of it.
Again, welcome and have fun!

Welcome to DFWfishbox. We're glad to have you join us.
I have a ton of fake plants you are more than welcome to have, though I'm not sure if you meant real or fake plants for your tank.

This would make a great fixture for your tank on the cheap. Use a couple of the cork screw fluorescents and you'd be good to grow "low light" plants.
I'm going to assume you know about the tank cycle? There are several folks in the Arlington area, but you're more than welcome to one of my seasoned filter pads if you need a bateria jump start.
Definitely let us know if you have any question or need any help.

i read you have anoles...i rescued one with only one hand and am working on fattenning him up and rehydrating him . he seems to be so thirsty! i just keep misting him and letting him lick the drops from the tank sides. i'm afraid he'll bite if i try to hand feed him!
what do you do with yours?

Basically I will rescue and care for amphibians (frogs, newts, salamanders, etc), hermit crabs, snails, freshwater exotic fish and plants/algae balls/Marino Balls/moss, etc.), and birds. I don't take in dogs (already have 3) or cats(allergic) or rats (or any rodent type furry creatures like guinea pigs, ferrets, rabbits, etc.) and no snakes or monitor type reptiles that must be fed mice.
I really just LOVE all our animals! I have two freshwater tanks set up at the moment with exotic fish.
One is 55 gallons and the other is 8 gallons.
We have 3 fire-bellied toads in a 30 gallon tank and 2 hermit crabs in a 75 gallon tank with a 435 gallon isolation tank for new or sick crabs, 3 apple mystery snails and a guppy (about to be a lot more!) and a 16 inch long plecostamous fish, and 3 dogs, all rescues.
Ever since my zebra finches died, I’ve missed their delightful noises so much, I really want another bird to love. I had a gray faced parrot years ago named Chico that ate hamburgers and let me pet his belly... I am barren so maybe that’s why I love my fur babies so much? Anyways, I want to adopt a large brained bird and a forever bird at that. I am ready for it , I already prepare quality diets and variety for all of my critters and am accustomed to all the upkeep and cleaning and maintenance.
But I spent my Christmas money on supplies for my current babies, larger habitats, tanks, toys and foods. So now I’m broke! (at least for this month)
I would be so happy if you would refer me to a needy bird who is not expensive to rehome (aka free! except the gas to come pick him or her up).
I spend our money on daily needs (crickets, worms, fruit) and utilities and don’t have the extra for an outright purchase. Would you please share my information with anyone you know of who has a bird or fish/amphibian/lizards/hermit crabs available for adoption?
Thank you in advance for considering me as a prospective forever home/handler for these animals, which I truly believe are special in God's eyes.
