LOL i have been reading...and they say only BP get black spot disease.......and then some say it's their coloration......BS cause mine was orange last night!! But know one knows how to treat it! I did a 25% water change added some medafix......and turned the heat up a little bit.....we'll see!!

My BPs have occasionally exhibited black tips on fins, spots on noses or bodies, etc. I think it's their reaction to stress or something. They go away within days. No big deal

My blood parrots got black spots when I moved them. They went away though. If you go to DNA...you see theres have black spots. From what I read, its just stress.

Brandy, your two year old took your blood parrots out of the tank and colored on them. There. Case solved. http://www.pushupstairs.com/images/emoticon/extra3/jester.gif

Google:

"The black streaks are common with parrots. Several things can cause it. First of all, check your ammonia & nitrite levels. I have found the parrots are a first indicator of water parameters being off. If the ammonia/nitrite is raised do a water change immediately and siphon off any debris.

If its not the water, then you can watch the parrot a few days & see if the spots disappear or treat with medicine. I spoke with a guy at the Tetra (http://www.tetra-fish.com/) company who said it is called black spot disease & is thought to be a parasite. Only parrots get it and he recommended using Maracide (http://inneroceans.com/store/medications/mardel-med.html). I have used Maracide which cleared it up but takes over a week. I have also used Malachite Green (http://www.argent-labs.com/malachitegreen.htm) to cure it & also done nothing & it went away. I've also heard Jungle's Parasite Guard (http://noahspets.com/manufact.html) works on it. I usually don't treat it unless it starts covering a lot of their body.

Someone here also told me the streaks will show up if the parrots is in the mood to mate. I have found that is true. Both my male & female parrots get streaks on the pelvic fins when they are preparing to nest. But since your parrot has a spot on its nose then it sounds more like the parasite. With my parrots, the black spots show on fins first, then the nose & face, then on their hump."

"I have had parrots for 7 years now. All the same ones I started with. Last year they started getting black spots not all of them just 3. It got so bad that half their bodies turned black. I tried all the suggested therapies maracide, melafix etc. Checked water levels everything was ok. But it continually worsened. A friend of mine told me when they are born they are black and turn different colors. I am not sure how true this is. However I STOPPED feeding them the tetra color flakes and in a matter of 2 months all the black dissappeared. I thought I might share this for others who have had this problem. "

"Hi, This may be a complete coincidence, but I've been reading up on why blood parrots get black spots or stripes, as my new one started developing them. I added 3 tbls of salt to 88l tank, and as if by magic over the next 24 hours all traces of any black have dissappeared off the parrot fish!

Sounds like it's caused by a number of things and treated a number of ways. Kinda a crap shoot as to which works.

It's an indication that the fish is getting ready to grow an extra appendage. Watch out!!!

Yeah...mine had spots just like that. ONe was even worse than that. No treatment and a few days later....it was all good. I think mine were stressed from the move. (moved from one home to another)

No need to worry-Parrots are 'made' from Midas/Red Devil cichlids. These fish go through many color changes as they get older. They start brown (as do small parrots) and then 'fade' to the orange color. Many will get white/black patches throughout their lives as did the red devils I kept. Happened even with wild fish from Lk Nicaragua. Just a phase. No med necessary.
