2 Aquariums filtered by 1 Canister

Has anyone seen where you use 1 canister filter to use on 2 or more aquariums? For example using a XP3 to filter 2 30g aquariums.

Ive only seen that work if the 2 30's are connected together via a water bridge of sorts. If you tried to split the input and the output another way, the GPH would be significantly reduced.

.....and if for whatever reason one gets backed up then the other will flood.

One way I could see this working...

Have both tanks drain into a common tote (say large enough to hold the volumn of both tanks plus extra), then put the XP3 on that the tote. But you still have the "clogged drain" problem.
