Rams, lights and spawning?

Rams like, or prefer, lower lights to spawn but when we redo the lights, they'll be a lot stronger than they like. So, I've read that they would benefit from some sort of floating plant.
Is that neccessary, or will they just spawn when the lights are out at night? If I do need to float something, what would be the best thing you think? Also, if the tank is well planted, wouldn't there be a certain amount of low dark places for them to do their thing?

Maybe this should've been in Plants??

I think if it is heavily planted they will find a nice place to do their deed.... or at night...
