Hofer is the way to go.

I could never get stockman or durso ultra quiet.

I moved this just becuase could actually be benifical....

I did not use Durso because my overflow is too small or the Durso Design is too big....

I have started a Stockman....

Is there any real reason I could not just flip the "bell" part of the design on the Stockman and add the air hose?

I am thinking I am going to build one with the flipped bell and on traditional Hofer design....

My 180 has a standpipe that is a straight pvc pipe with numerous holes drilled starting about 3-4 inches from the end. The cap is oversized and has three small holes drilled in it. It took a bit of patience, but I've got it to where it doesn't flush or gurgle, freaking the dogs out each time!

I started with a Durso design.... It will not work for my setup because it is too big....

with durso, you'll need to wait until the slime build up on the pipe...then it'll quiet it down..

Hofer is the best because its the smallest and with slight adjustments you can make it ultra quiet.

On the Durso, it'd be the limit of the smallest pipe size. If the bulkhead opening is 1", but the pipe is 1-1/2", it'd be the flow limit of 1" pipe.

On the Stockman and Hofer (almost seem the same to me, just one's inverted), the limit would be the hole diameters times the number of holes (of course only counting holes underwater/taking in water), then limited by the smallest pipe size.

The Durso seems the most "free flowing" while the Stockman and Hofer both have a flow limited by the holes in the pipe.

From experience........................

Stockman and Hofer.... not exactly the same....

Hofer has one group of holes all the way around.... if you do a series of holes like on the Stockman it is noisy as hell.... if you holes are not in a straight line noisy as hell....

Stockman I could not get very quiet. Hofer I got pretty quiet but would like it a little quieter....

So, this was from Durso's website, I was just wondering if the other 2 flowed the same amount but it all goes back to bulkhead sizing.

Conservative estimates for bulkhead flow rates are as follows:
3/4 inch - 350 gallons per hour per bulkhead (unconfirmed).
1 inch - 600 Gallons per hour per bulkhead.
1.5 inch - 1,500 Gallons per hour per bulkhead.

That was kind of what I was thinking... that it has to do with the size of pipe.... however, I think my 2 pipes (1.25") and bulkheads(1") are flowing about 1000gph....

To get the HOFER silent, you just have to adjust the air hose and the height of the bell.

remember to keep the hoses above the tank or the will siphon in the sump and you will have water on the floor.

Actually, it has to do with the bulkhead opening size and the pressure at which the water is being forced through that opening. If you have a 1" bulkhead opening with 15 psi of pressure (hydrostatic pressure by the way) it will be less flow than if it had 100 pounds of pressure. Plumbing and Pipe flow rate is usually stated at it's max pressure, so if a 1" bulkhead's flow rate is 1000 gph and max pressure is 200 psi, the 1000 is at 200 psi. It might be 500 gph at 100 psi, etc.

If you don’t know the pressure it’s pretty hard to calculate the flow rate, but the formula is:

GPM = Diameter Squared x Square Root Pressure x 29.7

GPM = dē * √p * 29.7

That was kind of what I was thinking... that it has to do with the size of pipe.... however, I think my 2 pipes (1.25") and bulkheads(1") are flowing about 1000gph....


That sounds about right, 1000 gph for both.

Another thing to keep in mind with the Stockman and Hofer designs is, making sure the holes will allow the flow rate of the bulkhead. Meaning, if the bulkhead will flow 500 gph, then make sure the size and number of holes will flow at least that amount.

How high did you have to get the bell? Right at the holes, or is it pretty high above them?

I think....

Anyway.... when I was adjusting it I did get the hose in the tank a few times and it would suck water like mad.... kinda cool.

^ yeah, a straight overflow is a lot louder than I thought it would be also.
