I have done this several times in the past and have always wondered...too much time on my hands?:p:

Anyway I picked up a pair of gold rams from Kahn at JFP and a couple days later decided I wanted another little girl to make a trio. I went and got her and put her in the tank with the other two.

Do you think they know they were together in the same tank from before and were already friends? Curious to see what everyone thinks...

Yes. I think fish are capable of thinking more than was realized in the past.

I agree with Sue, in that they recognize others. I have a Serpae that hangs around one of my plecos. I recently added 3 more of the same plecos to the tank, yet the Serpae still hangs with the original plec. There are 7 other Serpaes in the tank. Go figure...

Definitely! I've kept fish together then separated them. Months later when they ended up in the same tank again they started hanging out together immediately.

i guess, except for guppies. they're programmed to just eat, poop, reproduce, and die...

Some of the latest research shows that goldfish DO have memories and DO think and reason. I find all this fascinating!

Fascinating to me also Sue...I always say this is just one big science/biology project for me. Thats why I originally asked the question to see if anyone else had a feel or a sense about the subject.

I have often thought just by observing the behavior and traits that they are alot smarter than we give them credit for. I have heard also, the bigger they are the more intelligent...ie oscars over say little tetras but I'm not sure that is true either. They all seem pretty smart to me...in fact smarter than some people I know:p::D

On the other hand, Oscars are super smart. My family walks by the oscar tank at least 10 times a day but the oscars get all "happy" when they see me. I'm pretty sure that's because they recognize me. Same thing with the fire eel. he only comes out of his coconut shell when he see me. so yea, fish can think, and some better than humans.
