Just other males............usually not their mate........you can put some other small community fish with him as well. I have a male betta in with my guppies, mollies, platys, and tetras.

is this true? that females can live for life with males? we have 4 males in different tanks and a couple of females in different tanks also. i would like to combine them if possible.

I've always heard he will kill her once they have a nest going. He's in complete charge of the nest, will kill her over it and then he needs to be removed once the babies appear. At least that's how I've always seen it done...

Right....once the babies come, she needs to be seperated. He will tend to the nest until he can't keep up with the babies falling out...once that happens, he starts eating them. What a dad huh?

yea I've always heard that unless you have a large tank with plenty of hiding spaces that he will kill her or at least chase her mad. females are fine w other females and males are fine in community tanks but I would watch her. I've never tried it myself though, but my guess is that is why she is hiding in the cave

That's true. I will keep an eye on them. I watched them last night and she swam around and so did he but nobody seemed to care about each other. He was more interested in the frogbit I put in the tank.

Is it better to have no filter and just air bubbles with a betta? I know my male is making a bubble nest now too. Anything I should do to help him? I heard about the half styro foam cup for him to build in...

Ok...surprisingly enough, I have tiny babies in the bubbles that daddy created. Not sure when all this happened as I have been so busy doing other things that I hadn't kept a watchful eye.
Anyways, I removed the mom from the tank. The babies are very very tiny and when they drop out of the bubble nest, they swim straight back up and the dad usually puts them back in the nest.
Anyone have any idea of what I should do now?? Should I remove dad? What do I feed these little guys?

yay babies! Congrats! I have thought about breeding bettas a few times, but not sure that I am dedicated enough to try it at the moment. It is exciting to have babies though. My advice would be to research and visit the site that bgk245 gave you above. See what the web says about removing dad. ALso you may send a pm to blueskybetta. Keep us updated on the little ones :)

The big kahuna of web sites for bettas is http://bettatalk.com/ I could not think of that name the other day, so I pointed to AH. But there's not a lot that you can't find at bettatalk when it comes to bettas.
