Soak it in a cup of 50/50 water & bleach mix for an hour or so. Then rinse it off and let it soak in straight water to get as much of the bleach out as possible.

My diffuser was only producing 1-2 streams with bubbles far too large to diffuse efficiently because it was clogged with dirt and algae. After I soaked it in the solution, bubbles were escaping through the entire surface of the ceramic disk.

Good tip. I use peroxide and just soak the top of it for a while. I then dry it off and put it back in the tank. Both ways work I just am afraid to use bleach.
