I was at PetSmart tonight and saw that they were selling Mondo grass for freshwater aquariums. Since I have Mondo grass in my front yard, I am wondering if they are the same thing. The plants were completely submerged and looked great.

I wrote the name down off of the sticker that was on the plant at PetSmart:

ophiopogon japonicus var.

Mondo grass is cheap at places like Home Depot and Lowes. Is this the same plant? Has anyone had success adding this to your tank?

I'm sure someone will say it is not a "true" aquarium plant, but if it does well, I am all for it!

Thanks for your thoughts!

According to Neil Sperry's Complete Guide To Texas Gardening the lawn Mondograss is Ophiopogon japonicus just like you said.

Non aquatic plant, don't buy it, it wont do well in your tanks and will eventually rot.

And don't put the stuff from Home Depot in your tank! Nursery plants are covered in pesticide.
