View Full Version : Koi Weekend
spent a nice saturday down in houston with some incredible koi kichi.
Shigeru Mano of Dainichi Koi Farm along with Ron Goforth (recently retired ZNA District Chairman) gave 2 seminars on selecting koi for quality vs pattern and on Dainichi's new Hotaru Sanke bloodline.
We had people come from SoCal to Chicago for the event. Here are some videos of the koi.

I don't know jack about koi, but those are some beautiful ones, especially the mostly black one in the top video.

the mostly black ones are "showa" which is short for showa sanshoku. it is the 3rd member of what is referred to as the gosanke or big 3 of the koi hobby (the other two being the kohaku and the sanke).
showa are born black (sumi) with the red (beni or hi) and white (shiroji) are overlayed on top. as the koi matures, the sumi rises up and completes the pattern.
Dainichi is famous for all 3 gosanke and have won the most prestigious prizes with all 3. the most famous showa is what is referred to as the "Kato" showa. the name refers to the person who owned it when it won the All Japan in 1991. the first picture is the "Kato" showa. the second picture is of "Sakura", another Dainichi showa that won in 2007.

Duc, What was Mano san asking for those koi in the video and were they individually priced for the Jumbo Tosai, regular Tosai, and Hotaro?
Thanks

Hi Grant,
The Hotaru were a special purchase by a study group at $500 each (he normally sells these in Japan for minimum $1000) as a gift to the club. This was awesome to be the first in the US to get a hold of a new bloodline to study.
The regular tosai are $150 and the jumbo tosai are $500. Here are the stills of the tosai.
Let me know if you want any of them as I will be going back down to Houston to pick up a couple koi I left behind last weekend.
If you are debating the $500 tosai, the skinny kohaku was picked by 2 ZNA judges as the best one (they said don't worry, she will fill out and beat the other one easily).
Best,
I also know nothing about Koi but enjoy looking at them. I don't even have room for a pond at this point; however, someday I might like to have some. Thank you for sharing your beautiful pictures. The fish are amazing.

glad i can share more of this hobby. i've met incredible people in this journey since starting 6 years ago and want to share and grow the hobby.
lot of people think that koi keeping is an exclusive club but in reality, it is one of the most inclusive group of people i've ever met.
