my BN seems to have a patchy appearance to him. It's difficult to describe other than to say it looks like a reptile in mid molt. anyone know anything about this?

I can't tell from the picture. Is skin peeling off, or is it a patchy color pattern?

it's a patchy color pattern. it seems to come and go in varying degrees :confuzeld:

It is hard to tell from the side-view photo. Can you take a photo of the top of the body and head?

They do that when they are stressed out... It's like with any other fish turning pale.

All mine have that its a trait 98% of the time my plecos used to toss out before I sold them. Its fairly common if you got a plec fromme to see that

I have a couple of BNs that are "patchwork quilt" looking. In my mind I call them calicos, even though I know that name is take for those red marble BNs.

interesting. I'll try to get a better picture.

most of mine have them as well but as they get larger the spots have gone away.

Yeah, that is just a natural variation and nothing to worry about. I have some like that myself.
