I'm thinking about putting him in with the CRSs with some more females, but not sure yet.

I have 3 mollies that have filled the breeding tank with tons of babies from 1" down

OH...almost forgot...I have guppies galore. I have who knows how many babies swimming around. Started with maybe 6 or so and have 18 - 20 adults that seem to reproduce like rabbits

:D, did you see the title under the "Livebearer" section?

I had a population explosion after getting my tank healthy and picking up some new fishies. I now have a 10g set up just for babies. Can't tell what they are yet, but I know I've got some marble/dalmation mollies, SA mollies, pineapple mollies, and something else I can't figure out what it is. Coloring is all different and they were teeny tiny when born.

ah! THe guppy orgy! Now I see why I have tons-o-babies...those are horny bastards
tsunderl
12-07-2007, 04:12 PM
Put 20 more babies in the 10g. They look like they are going to be orange and black spotted. Pretty cool!
How long does it take mollies to grow out anyway? Seems like FOREVER!!!
AndrewH
12-09-2007, 10:56 AM
It's taken my guppy fry about 5-6 months to grow out big nuff for me to feel comfortable moving them, but I don't know how they compare to mollies.
jaglover
12-14-2007, 07:24 AM
How fast they grow depends largely on what they're fed, how often, and tank conditions. Babies fed once a day on cheap food in a crowded tank grow very slowly.
When I'm trying to grow out babies, I usually feed 3 - 4 times a day. Their itty bitty stomachs can't hold much at once! I feed daphnia, specialty livebearer flakes, micro pellets, and algae sheets. I know there are also specialty fry foods that are supposed to enhance growth, but I haven't tried any of those. If you're worried about overfeeding, just make sure to vacuum the gravel good and do frequent water changes.
If your tank is overcrowded, your babies will not grow quickly. Crowding can also prevent male sailfin mollies from developing that beautiful sailfin. Try moving a handful into a sparsely populated tank.
Hope this helps!
AndrewH
12-14-2007, 09:30 AM
Dang, thank you for the help! (and good to see you again)
I didn't think about them needing food several times a day. I'll have to keep that in mind.

Just doing a regular water change and WT.. there where baby cherry barbs. Didn't even have a clue that they were there. Well, only 2 lone fry. Any idea when I can give away or release in the community?
AndrewH
12-20-2007, 06:43 PM
I'm not too sure about cherry barbs, but my best guess would be: wait until they're at least 1/4" long and eating well.
jaglover

I have molly fry free to good homes. Bronzes and Bronze/Gold Hybrids. I live in Irving by the airport. Come and pick up!
jaglover
12-22-2007, 11:28 AM
If no one speaks up for the molly fry by December 27, Reyrey is going to take them as feeders. I'd rather they were used as pets, but I really need them gone!
heidiosburn
12-22-2007, 10:59 PM
My cherry barbs seem to be eating well and I think that they might be 1/4" but, I am scared cause of the other fish in the tank. Like my gourami and shark. What do you think. I have been feeding them baby brine shrimp from my hatchery. Not sure how much longer to make them wait in the tiny breeder tank alone. But, don't want to hurt them.
tsunderl
12-22-2007, 11:06 PM
We moved some of the babies back to the big tank. It's really fun to watch them. They are about the size of the neons and try to school with them. The neons are like, NO WAY, and swim away from them.
I noticed a huge difference in their growth rate when I put them in the 10g. as opposed to them being in the iso tank. I have a feeling I'll be getting a larger grow out tank... Just put about 60 balloon mollie fry in there a couple days ago! Cute itty bitty things though. :)
jaglover
12-24-2007, 02:44 PM
Nobody wants to give homes to some molly fry? The bronzes should turn out pretty sharp. It's hard to tell about the gold/bronze hybrids, but they have potential to be good-looking once they color up a bit!

ummm I thought snails were allsex....no males and females....and can produce by themselves.
Some are, but not all. Most freshwater snails are hermaphrodites and can produce both sperm and eggs. One snail will lay a clutch of eggs, then another will come by and fertilize them. There are a few species of freshwater snails that are sexed, but they are not the common.

and wanted to ask have u ever heard of the green sword. my mom told me about them and said they were more agresive the the red.
Haiven
05-25-2008, 09:57 AM
Fred, the green swords are the wild ones, from which the others were bred. They're not really green, they're kinda gray. I prefer the reds and yellows.
I don't know about their temperaments, though.

do you have any Ameca Splendens fry??

Haiven added 7 Minutes and 24 Seconds later...
Laurel, I have two Ameca Splendens fry you can have. My female gave birth to six fry almost two weeks ago. You will not believe how huge they are for less than two weeks old!
Of course the downside is that females only give birth to a few (6-8) babies at a time.
As far as swordtail fry are concerned, I'd love to have 10-12 if you have that many available. Do they all look the same, or are they varied?

oh you shouldnt have crossbred them. pure endlers are really expensive nowadays.
ElijahTurtle
11-18-2008, 10:58 AM
Don't worry I have the pure strain in a seperate tank. I'm pretty sure the ones I got from Haiven are pure as well based on the body structure & coloration patterns. They are distinctly Endler's just not as colorful as my original strain that I got from another member. You can't line breed fish forever or you will end up with genetic flaws. I'm crossing the 2 pure strains from different genetic sources.

cant really tell you if mine are pure or not i got it from a good friend who didnt want them anymore and he had them for awhile, never cross-bred them with anything and ever since i got mine they have their own tank and never seen another type of livebearer. he had them for about a year and since he gave them to me ive had them for over a year now.
they can cross with pretty much any other type of livebearers i assume. guppies are the common type they would crossbreed with. ive seen some endler platties and mollies... theyre like dogs. like how you need papers to show that they are a certain type.. AKC, or whatever.

I have some fancy guppy females and males, some are grown and some are teenagers. I would like to get some new blood again in my guppy population. Can trade someone some of my females and males for some of yours if anyone close to me has any. The tails on these I have now are like the yellow with black spots in them, some looking like yellow cobras kinda. There is some orange, white and split tails in the mix also. The females all have colorful tails also.
I dont really want any of the ones who have a lot of black in them, more into colorful.
Endler's sound cool, but I dont have a seperate tank to put them in.

Shipping java moss is easy just put it in a ziplock baggy with just a little water added ( double bag for safe measure ) box it up and ship it out if you use a small box the shipping cost is low using regular USPS mail. I ship fish priority so they usually make it to someone in metroplex the next day sometimes it takes 2 days but not often has that happened. PM me if you want to do a swap for Guppy fry for Java moss

My RJ female has been lurking behind my custom concrete background for about a week and when I went to do a w/c last eve I found a ton of tiny fry back there! There is an opening that is about 4 inches around that she goes back and forth from. This is her second batch. The first one only one lived to juvie size. I tossed them some Ken's fine Premo Veggie Flake. I am so hoping most of these make it! Will post up if they make it to juvie size!

I found some blue platies at a LFS, have been looking for them for awhile.
I am keeping them separate from the other platies so they stay blue. I will be keeping the other 5 varieties parents seperate also so they don't intermix. The blues are becoming more iridescent and growing very quickly by the day as I am feeding them a super toddler food I made up.

what do you mix for there food ?
All freeze dried, crushed up very, very fine with fingers.
Tetra algae flakes
Tetra baby shrimp (these two I usually crush first as they are the hardest)
Tetra colormin flakes
Hikari bloodworms
Hikari First Bites
Hikari brine shrimp
Cyclopzeez (got online dont know the manu off hand) This is a super food by itself...bio engineered minicrabs. They are also testing this food for mammal and human use because of the massive nutritional value for the size of the animal.
Fry bites (again cant remember manu)
I will add other products as I find them and if they are a good fit.
This is a very easy recipe and the little ones love it. I think it is really good for them and is making them grow very fast and healthy.
Very easy to feed a little pinch of this two or three times a day. Most floats on the surface but some sinks for the ones who wont venture off the bottom or middle.
They also get frozen baby brine shrimp, daphnia, rotifers and cyclopzeez occasionally.
A good variety of foods are good for all your fishies not just the babies...I can tell a huge difference in coloring, attitude, and overall health from all my guys since I have been mixing up their diet. We wouldn't like to eat just fish flakes all the time and they don't either:)

I have a special place in my heart for Blue Platies. the first fish I got as a kid was a pregant female blue platy. My dad setup a 5 gallon in my room for her.
(unfortunately that was a long long time ago...)

I cleaned out the cabinets of a room next to mine in our school and found a bunch of old aquarium stuff. I was able to set up a reptile tank, a 5 gallon, a betta tank, and a 10 gallon. I teach 7th grade science and it all goes well with my curriculum. Anyway, I need fish for the 10 gallon. I'm in Mansfield. I tried to PM a few people but I couldn't because I don't have 10 posts.
I have only one female blue platy but still am getting blue babies.....I guess female platies, like female guppies, can hold male sperm for quite some time.

Platies, mollies, swordtails and guppies can hold sperm for up to five or six broods, ewok.
Texscite, if you want to come to Richardson I have all kinds of platies for your classroom alot of babies too so your students can watch them growup.
The great thing about platies is they grow fast and have alot of babies.
