I have 3 N. Brevis in a 10 gal. They seem to be super happy and I believe that I have one male and 2 females. I could be wrong, but one is much larger than the other two. The larger fish and one of the smaller have been shell-sharing. I take this as a good sign, hopefully they are falling madly in love. lol. The other "female" just sits in the corner though. I mean, it eats well and is healthy, but it has just burrowed out a place in the sand because the male has taken most of the shells to himself. I guess I need to add more shells. Anyways, what are the chances that I have a pair? I would be super excited to have babies.

Anyone know what age/size Brevis have to be to spawn?

One of them will show a nice yellow square on their sides when they are ready.. two cozied up in a shell is a pretty good indicator of eggs/babies! Brevis are actually monogamous, so that is why the other female is off by herself--they don't form harems. She will probably be harrassed if you leave her in there, you could get another maile, but definitely make sure there are some visual barriers to give her hiding places and make the pairs territory defined.

I am getting 5 Neolamprologous Multifasciatus this week and I am VERY excited. I get a kick out of watching the Brevis at TP squish into their shells.. they are little pudgy suckers too! I will prolly get some Brevis too, very soon!

Thanks for the info Catherine. I have kept many cichlids before, but this is my first try with shellies. The pair that I have are definatly sharing a shell, though not all of the time. Sometimes the male will go to one of his other shells and then return to hers with her. The other female is forced to the other side of the tank, but is not being chased too bad until feeding time. It is only a 10 gallon tank, so would I be crowding by adding another male? I know their territories are small, but sounds a little cramped to me. I may add several other things to tank to make her more comfortable and seen less by the pair.

How do you sex these fish? I have two in my 125g but they don't show much interest in each other.

how do you sex brevis? or multies? With Brevis, a good indication is that a male will be 2x larger than a female of the same age. There is also some difference in fins that can't be determines too well unless the fish are "flaring" their fins. there are also some behavior indications as the fish age I belive, but size difference is the main thing from what I understand.
