I did the same thing. I made a little frame out of wooden fence panels for mine.

ive had one on top of my glass tops for over 2.5 years...
I've also seen where people have added DIY legs to the ends. its prolly better than just having them lay on top of the glass...but I don't think its a must.

Mine have rusted in a few years of use. But then again I have gotten them wet. If you can keep them dry they would last for some time I think.
Try the fixture from wallmart.It holds 2 T-8 48 inch. 10 bucks
Get bulbs from HD. I use daylight 6500 k phillips, a pair of T8 bulbs 4 or 5 bucks.

Same here. They r fine laying on the top with glass lids. Walmart fixtures r good. I have had several start strobing or just quit so save the reciept.

I would say that it really depends on which light you bought. My $10 HD light fixture does not have covers over the lights. There is no way that I would just set it on the glass covers on the tank.
If it has the plastic covers that cover the fixture and not just the lights then I would say it would be OK to set on the glass. Or if it was the light fixture that has the extra large reflectors that will hold the bulbs off the glass it would be OK as well.

You can use rain gutter from Lowe's to make a hood for smaller tanks. You will have to buy a lenght of it and caps for the ends. Cut it to the length you need and snap the ends on. Silicone the small fixture to the inside top of the new hood, let it set and you are ready to go. Gutter comes in several colors, I usually use brown. Big Lots sells a set of 3 small florescent fixtures w/lamps that can be used in series or individually for $24.
