4695I stripped all the gravel from my 10gal.
I waged a battle I couldn't win, picking them off 1 to 10 at a time.
Now I am thinking put the gravel out to freeze at night :twist:
Will this kill them all.
I like this gravel other wish I wouldn't bother it is small like large sand. Anyone know where I can get more?

I actually don't mind the snails so much in the couple of tanks I have them in (they came in with "free" plants so be sure and ASK before you accept plants from tanks with snails if you really hate them). They don't look very pretty when they're in mass numbers, but they keep the tanks REALLY clean. However, I did get some assassin snails at Fish Gallery. I got four for my 30-gallon tank, and they've really torn through the population so that actually may be too many. I plan to move them around to the other tank and then back as the population flourishes and declines.

My problem is I have my blue snails I want to keep and have eggs. The plant riders get after my plants and mess them up. I even got rid of a bunch of ramshorn eggs.

OMG! I am having a rams-horn explosion in one of my tanks! Like you, I have blue apple snails I want to keep. I have black CQ in that tank and don't know what to do other than keep netting them out and throwing them outside! I am wanting to get assassin snails and pull out the blue snails. Does anybody in Dallas/Mesquite have some?

Assassin snails leave big snails alone. At least they do in my tanks. Unless your mystery snails are the same size as your pest snails I think you'd be okay adding them. The problem I have is that the assassin snails like to stay at the bottom of the tank and they never venture up to the top where the pest snails have figured out they need to hang out to stay alive. They're still reproducing faster than I can smash them.

I have a kazillion rams-horn and they must die! Can cichlids eat smushed snails?

I am going to get some type of botias or loach for my other tanks but I heard you need to get more than 1 and they are like $9.00. They don't breed in captivity.
I wanted to get some baby angels but I guess my money will go to botias.

I believe a 10g tank is too small for any clown loach, and I've read you need to keep them in numbers of three and up for them to be happy and display normal behaviors. Not all of them eat snails either.

Before I got the assassin snails, I would put a rock in a knee-high stocking/hose (fine mesh cloth) with a piece of squash in it. I'd sink that to the bottom, front of the tank and turn off the lights. In the morning, that mesh would be COVERED with snails feasting on the squash. I'd net out (to avoid any of them falling out as I collected the stocking). Repeat. Works well. Saltwater folks used to use it to catch fire/bristleworms. Works for freshwater snails, too.

That is a great idea! Thanks!

if they are mts, i would just leave um in there. they are great cleaners and as long as the population is down they wont been seen during the day

How about a dilute solution of bleach? I too hate MTS, especially in sand. I like the red/pink ramshorn snail though.

It's time to recycle my snail experience. Check this out if you haven't already ready it.

That gravel looks like the pre-bagged one they have at Dallas North Aquarium. I'm almost 80% sure it looks the same. (except the blue stuff)

Will the bowl and veggies trick not work with MTS?

About once a month (maybe full moon, who knows?) MTS congregate to breed. They come out of the substrate and they all climb on decorations, rocks, etc. That's your best chance to thin them out. I wait for a bunch to climb on something and then net the decoration or rock out, pick/rinse off the snails, then put it back in the tank for another 40-50 to climb on.

Crap, I must have left my last big net at the assisted living place! I was going to net a bunch of the little buggers! I'm in a sad state, no panty-hose or squash either! Must get to Wally-World ASAP!

The blue was to show regular gravel this is smaller. I don't want pea gravel wanted this small stuff.

I left the gravel outside will the snails die in the freeze? After all they are bionical. At least the way they reproduce?

I have same snails problem in my 75G tank. I also would like to know which is the best way to kill them. I would like to reuse them because it's a ADA Amazone type I soil. TIA

Yeah if its the smaller gravel, the I'm sure either Fish Gallery or DNA would have them in large clear fish bag.
