View Full Version : No longer a problem but...

I've lost soo many fish in the past two weeks! A dwarf gourami, 3 female swords, a couple of neons, a few Dalmation juveniles and even the biggest Sailfin Molly from Haiven.
I'm not sure what happened but I did a water change and David changed the filter (the water was a little high but it shouldn't have been fatal), I lost a few more after that and now it seems to have settled. Even Mutant Momma Molly was affected by it and she had a trashed eye.

The good news is that when David worked on the filter, he found three babies...but one was promptly eaten (ok, so that bit isn't so good).

I'm still befuddled as to what happened though. The dwarf gourami was a male and he looked fine. I'm thinking he was gently terrorized by the big male and he just went belly up.

Misty, I'm sorry to hear that! It's so frustrating to not be able to put your finger on the problem! Is Rainbow okay?

If you need some mollies to restock, I can help you out!

(the water was a little high but it shouldn't have been fatal)

Explain this...
do you mean the water level was high or one of the test readings were high.

If one of the test readings were high; which one?

What was in the filter? Carbon? if so how long was it in there?

Sorry guys...

It was the ph that was a little high, certainly not higher than it's ever been though. As for the carbon, since I got the BRs I've been pretty diligent with all the tanks so it was only 1 month old. We also have the white nuggets (I have yet to remember what that stuff is called when I need to) and it's as old as the carbon was. It's possible, but not very likely, that I missed last month.

What could've happened I guess, is that when I scrape the hood glass, if the algae (we have bubble spray that reaches up there) is a healthy green, I let it float and the fish feed off of it; Maybe they made gluttons out of themselves?? There's a lot of fish in there though so I doubt they got more than their share.

I'm going to chalk it all up as a fluke and quit worrying about it. I've been watching that tank like a hawk and there haven't been anymore deaths. I even moved a BR in there and he's a happy little camper...becoming the king of the tank me thinks.:rolleyes1:

kewlkatdady,
Since you asked about water level...is it possible to be too high? I've always kept my water level above the bottom of the top trim band so I don't have to watch the lights flashing off the surface, plus I think it looks nicer. I can't stand half filled tanks...unless it's a fry tank, but it's not in the living room like the 100g.

Haiven,
Yep, he's good. As are his sisters and mom now that her eye cleared up. Thank you for the offer but I have enough right now, lol. I was getting attached to the big Sailfin too...he was very personable. I didn't know these get spotty too, there's also a bright orange one in the bunch.

Somebody, and I don't know who it is, is shooting out about one baby a day. It's very typical of Mutant Momma to hold on to them until they reach their teens and start sneaking out but since I have Uno and Dos, I can't wholeheartedly accuse her of it this time, lol.

No the water level can't be too high...unless its over flowing of coarse.

How are or were your other params?

I didn't wirte it all down but I recall everything else as being fine...or at least fine enough that I wasn't concerned. I was using the same test I've always used, the drops in the water vials, so it wasn't that I read them wrong either.

Misty hopefully you're talking about the API test kits...
they are good and easy to read.

How much of a PH swing was there?

I know the BR's (bolivian rams...i think) are a lower ph fish...
were was the ph before and after the sudden raise?

Mutant Momma and my favorite dwarf gourami plus the last female swordtail, all my male guppies except for the ones with red tails have died.

I haven't lost a single xray tetra, all of Mutant Momma Molly's babies (now adults) are good, my younger dwarf gourami is perfect, the BR in there is still tootin around fine, the neons are great, my last male swordtail is still a stud, the female guppies are good...these fish are all fine...for the time being. I have about 10 Molly fry that are great...healthy, eating and quite active.

The only thing in common with all of these dying fish is that they were all bought within the same week of each other with the exception of the BR. They were bought at various stores. There hasn't been any signs of disease but knowing that the life span is around two years...I very well might lose everybody that wasn't dropped here, except for a few.

The only sign that anything is wrong in there is that now it looks so empty.:(

Misty, I know what you're going through. It sucks. When this was happening in my tank, I got a combination of meds recommended to me and used them. Since, I've had one loss, but I think that was age related.

The meds I used are all Seachem products and are NeoPlex, Focus, Metronidazole, and KanaPlex. I got them from a store on the service road for 75 just before 15th and next to a Jeep repair shop. Can't remember the name of the store (FORGIVE ME!!!), but you have to ask for it as they keep it behind the counter. Cost for all was around $25 and medicated my 135g tank.

Good luck and I'll have some fishies for you when the babies get mature. Just let me know. :)
