I picked up a gorgeous orange male the other day and he's been making bubble nests like crazy. I'm thinking of breeding him, but wanted to find out from those who's been successful how best to set up the love nest.

Here I am...roflmaoroflmaoroflmao

You need to have about a 10g and put a short sponge filter in it, a heater and fill the tank about half full of water. Put some plants or things for hiding spots for the female and you will need a styrofoam cup cut lengthwise and placed upside down in the water for the male to make his nest in.

Have the male in this tank and you will need a vase or container for the female that you can put down in the water so they can be viewing themselves. Once he has built the nest and she seems ready, then you put her in the water with him and watch them for a while to make sure they are not going to kill each other. With any luck it will happen. It can take them a short period of time or can take up to about 5 hrs for them to complete everything..

I may regret asking this, but how do you know when she's ready??? http://bestsmileys.com/love1/23.gif

She will plump up, get vertical stripes, and lower her head when he approaches.

She will plump up and her egg tube will hang out farther. Once you put her in the tank with the male, if ready, she will show interest in the male and follow him back to his nest. They will swim all over the tank and she may go back and forth for a while until she feels confident in his nest.

Sounds easy enough. :)

What kind of orange Betta is he? Crowntail, HM, veiltail? Which female are you going to try with this orange male?

I haven't gotten pics of him, but he looks a lot like this one-

Not sure which female I'm going to try to pair him with. Suggestions?

I've done forgot all the colors of the females you have  that I saw a few weeks ago.
Did you get a purple female from me? That might be a good combination. You have that black one from me, isnt it a female? It would've come from the King Betta spawn with the same type tail as yours has.

He is absolutely beautiful.. love that color orange. Does yours have the black lining on the scales as well?

I have a purple female and the black female from you. I also have one with a pink body and violet fins as well as one with a plain body and medium blue fins. I was leaning towards Nina, the pink bodied one. I'd have to watch her though as she has a bit of an attitude. Prima donna betta, so she thinks. lol I have two other females, but one's recovering and the other is still tiny (the DNA female you twisted my arm to buy!).

He has some black lining and has more of the blue at the base of his tail which you don't see unless he's showing off. Course, him being orange, I named him Hemi. :D

(the DNA female you twisted my arm to buy!). Meeeee!

Great name.. Hemi.. I like that. Ahhh I remember the tiny one, she's so cute, what did you name her?

Yeah, I was thinking you had a pink one.. that would look really good together with the orange, I bet you'd get some marbles out of that with orange in them.

Not yet. Been moving tanks and other fishies around. Once I dig out from the piles of aquarium equipment, I'll set up a love nest and let 'em go at it. ;) He's still making bubbles and is getting quite good at it.
