Lemme tell ya gang... this is NOT an ideal combo!

Pleco sucks black rocks, creates black poop, which just POPS against the white sand. POPS in a non-pretty kinda way! LOL! He's gotta go!

I'm thinking of clown loaches as the clean up crew. I've been told they can take the higher temp and lower ph of this tank. Do these guys eat algae? Not real concerned if they do or don't... I do know they will eat all the left over food. And, hopefully their poop is a more "pleasing" color!

Great subject first thing in the morning, eh?

I love my CL's!!! And they don't poop like the pleco's.....but you think yours is bad!! Jaws waits until I do a water change and then poops a 2 ft strand and drops it like he is toilet papering the tank!! It's a MESS!!!!!

Yeah, I've got two clowns in the african tank and they are awesome.

But, the more I think about this... I'm wondering if it isn't the Discus that are dropping all the plack poo. I had black flagstone in the 30 with a pleco and no problem there.

WhoEVER it is... is the poopinest fish ever! I just did a wc and poo suctioning yesterday. I swear that right now you couldn't tell that I did.

Does anyone know... do Discus poop alot?????

How about some Cherry Red Shrimp as a clean up crew? I bet they'd stand out really well against those colors plus they do eat algae ;).

Mine 10" pleco poops all over the place, all the time. Just like what you described, do a WC then 10 minutes later it looks like I haven't done one in a month.

I think the rule is that fish must poop 10 times their body length at a time. I don't understand how they keep all of that stored inside them!!! I'm glad us humans don't do that! (Well, there are a few exclusions, but won't name names.) http://www.pushupstairs.com/images/emoticon/extra3/wcj.gif

Can the skrimps take the 84-86 temp?

The only fish I've sen poop that much are plecos! See em cruising around with a 12" poop streamer! ACK!

I do not think the shrimp do well at the higher temps. From what I have read and I think that is why I am not doing well with the CRS.

I have mine at 84-86 and now have 8 with eggs :D

The thermometer on the tank stops at 86 and my heater is set as low as it'll go. I do plan to change out the heater ASAP, so to get the temps lower in the tank, but they seem to be breeding with it that high.

I know I see them a lot more when the temp is closer to 80, and I have had fewer die since the temp is lower.

Of course now my Apistos have decided that a CRS will fit in their mouth so they have eaten 2 in the past 24 hours.... I have pics I need to post, it takes hours for them to get it eaten. They swim around with the tail sticking out of their mouths.... just to taunt me I think.

To my knowledge, I haven't lost any since I got them in the tank a few months ago (Shrimp and snail only tank, though).

I don't know if the Discus could eat them... their mouths are SO small!

Mine adult CRS are 1" max. (probably closer to 3/4" is the norm in a tank of 30-40 individuals).

10 times their body??? WOW Jaws is 19 inches......I might need to start measuring it!! LOL I think they don't like the fresh clean water and like to keep it dirty!

CRS are about the same size as the Apisto Pebas that is eaxing them....A Discus with a mind to eat one will have no trouble doing so.

Michelle,
The BD's if you feed them enough (too much) you would be in pain to see what can come out. i would bet if it just started its your new BD....

I think it's all of them, Ted... It's been a problem all along. None of my other fish poo this much and I just assumed that it was the pleco. Wrong assumption on my part!

*sigh* the white sand sure is pretty, except for all that black poop on it :(

i stepped up my feedings at one time with my fish and they were happy to eat but not happy with the end result. its probably the discus then, ive never noticed any on my white gravel though

I'm really not feeding them that much. Very lightly a couple times a day. They are all still a bit slow on eating and I've got the voracious pleco in there to clean up the excess.

I am very happy to see that the BD is eat well after only being here a couple of days!

I just dunno.. it's a freakin mystery! I've seem em poop brownish red stuff. But, this poo is short lil pieces. Not your typical pleco long stuff.

I dont' want to cut back on feeding, they aren't eating that much.

I know they don't mess with the flagstone but, I wonder if that , some how, has something to do with it.

That's what my pleco's poo looks like. Short brownish/redish pellets. Not the long strings like the gouramis, but not invisible like the tetras.

I'd post a pic, but poo ain't fun to look at :D

I'm with kewlkatdady, I didn't need to know that :puke:

It looks like it always has (and like all the other plecos I've had), and it changes depending on what color the algae is. I did have a lot of green algae and now there's more brown algae.

I wonder if that makes a difference in the pleco poo? (I'm sure is has too, right)

Oh, and I feed waffers and tried a white "10 day" feeder disc the other day. Seemed to go alright, but I don't think I'll do it again (clouded the water).
