I don't think I've ever seen a tank shot where the gar was the little guy. Great fish, hope you don't have to donate him.

got him at less than 12". as far as stocking a stock tank/pond, 75 degree water is pushing the bottom limit pretty hard so ain't gonna work up here :( yes, his left eye is dropped. he has been through some shit in his day. for one, last fall the center brace on my 300 blew out and when the light fixture fell in he jumped out onto the couch. he has jumped through a couple lids too. he's a tough beast for sure, and i'll miss him early. but hey, he'll have a nice big ponds with friends at DWA and i think he's bigger than theirs which is kinda neat.

I don't think a pond would work. Its to cold in the winter and arros like to jump so I don't think they would last in a pond unless you were going to cover it.I don't think they would look good in a pond because you would only get a top veiw.Need bright colors in a pond.I have had arros jump out of my tanks by the filter and I have had them jump into the glass on top and break it.They are some of the coolest fish to have but they can be a pain also. They have a great personality and are the first ones to come to you for feeding. This is a nice one ,I love them big.

Austin
08-10-2009, 10:46 PM
yes they are jumpers! i will put a lid on my indoor pond when it actually comes to build time. aro's won't go in there more than likely but the cat's would love to fish in it otherwise :hehe:

Now I can see how you and Stan came to be friends. lol

I think you should just give me your 300, take Stan's 600, and Stan can order a bigger tank like he's talking about doing. We'll all be happy! :D

Very nice looking aro you have there. What the heck do you feed a beast like that, small kids?

I saw in another thread where you're planning an indoor pond. Do you plan to transfer him into it or is DWA the only option?

I just saw this post today which is funny since we just visited DWA yesterday for the first time. They had several fish like this in one of the tanks. It was about 2' deep and they had plenty of room to swim, and they were viewed mostly from the top. I think that most of them were all around 2 to 3 feet in size.

They were close enough that my mom decided she had to pet one of them. She reached down and slid her hand down the side of the fish and it just kept on cruising like nothing had happened.

---

In the LARGE tank, I just called and discovered that it is a 240,000 gallon tank (225 without filtration water included), they had two or three of the Arapaima which I thought was in the same family as the arros but I guess I was incorrect about that. They are cool fish but I don't think I will ever have a tank that could keep anything like that.

I also don't think I would like to have an aro if I have to feed it better than my wife and kids. roflmao

Dude i love your arro
Mine died a cuple weeks ago. he was bout 16" and had him since he was bout 4". I also have a gar bout 6". Oh and what do you feed your gar? I feed mine blood worms just like my other fish i have.

Austin
10-19-2009, 10:47 PM
i have 3 gar. everything i have eats market shrimp and frozen smelt. it takes about 1-1.5 lbs every feeding for everything to eat it's share so traditional "fish foods" don't really work for the big guys ;)

Why would you want to get rid of him. They are great fish and I would think a 300 would be plenty big for him.I had my 24 incher in a 110 and he did fine for a couple years until my cichlids decided to breed and nipped him to death before I knew what was going on.

Austin
10-20-2009, 11:23 AM
24" in a 110 is just uncalled for in my opinion. Probably why he didn't grow in those 2 yrs. Mine's almost half as long as the tank now because mine is a custom 6' 300. I may be able to come u with a 7' tank in the next couple weeks if the finances work out. Had planned to get it a month ago but was layed off the next week. Him, the dats and some of the bichir can stay in that an i'll keep the black aro, the bass and other things in the 6' tank.

he won't go anywhere unless DWA takes him, or someone else has an 8' tank or larger and i've seen it...

back in april when my house burned down I lost my 30" aro. He was in a 360gal custom das tank. I have a ten foot long tank but I am going native trinity river with that one. Hopefully my fund situation can correct itself also, so I can get my hobby addiction properly fed.

Yeah, he's a big one. I've really come to like black aro's better. I'll only keep those and lei's from here on out.
