Question about Swordtails?

I have about 5 yound ones and I'm wondering about the sword...when should it appear on young males?

Mine are different ages and none of them are showing anything yet. It'd be great if I had at least one other male or the one I do have is gonna be busy!

I have heard it has to do with when they reach maturity and they need to have females.

I have noticed on mollies that if they are not one of the dominant males they will not have the sail fin or color up as nice. If I move them to a tank where they are in charge the color and fins change. Might be similar to sword tails.
