Brandy,
The returns from your power filters should be enough to break the surface tension and allow the gas exchange to take palce at the surface. CO2 is lighter than oxygen, and builds up at the surface. If you disturb the surface through aggitation, the CO2 escapes allowing oxygen to replace it in the tank water. So using the returns from your power filters will help this along greatly. You could keep the air pump and add a "bubble feature" like a bubble wall or just stick the air line tube outlet in a rock and let it do its things as the bubbles rise to the surface. The rising bubbles will break the surface tension also. I hope that answers your question.

play sand...I've heard is dirtier and harder to clean in the initial setup...

PFS is what i used and it cleaned up pretty easily.

Play sand is very dirty.

Color quartz will be easy to clean and is not too expensive, and you get some color options.

it takes FOREVER to clean the sand blasting stuff Brandy. I wanna say Lowe's or HD has the sand blasting stuff.

The 3M colorquartz is about $25/ 50lbs and super easy to clean, plus you get to pick your own colors. That's what I have in Peanut's tank. I got 4 bags I think...

Blake's got a good color mix already- get him to snap a picture of it.

S grade is about $18 and T grade depending on the color is $18-$22 for 50lbs. I guess their website is down.... so no link for you...

I would suggest doing a color mix because multiple colors helps to hid fish crap- 3 colors mixed looks better than 2, look better than 1 IMHO. And why not, you're getting multiple bags. I bet your footprint is about what mine is 8'x24"- right? I did 4 bags, but for cichlids, you might go one or two bags heavier.

Not really, the playsand is definetly harder. Blasting sand is cleaner and more uniform as it needs to be for blasting. Only dust to deal with otherwise it is pretty clean.

I got mine in Denton at Gohlke supply.

You can get grade 3 which is basically sugar sand (white)
and grade 4 which is uniform grained sand and it is tan colored

Best bet off the top of my head is to try United Rentals on US82. They should have some there and you could look to see what they have. They may not have the finer stuff but they should have the courser #4 size.

sand blasting sand, in my opinion would scrach up the glass. don't beleive me let me show you want it can do to paint and rust if you put it in a media blaster.

Ummm..Joey we aren't shooting this at the tank with compressed air. Sand blasting sand is just sand that has been sifted and graded to a uniform size...

Maybe Joey just figured out why his tank looks all scratched up... not supposed to "shoot the sand into the tank".

:) naa, just catching up. I was still at KKD and FHB's pad most of the day on Sunday, then Monday I hung out with my girls and watched football, then last night was the first chance I've had to get on the boards.

My wife was understanding and supportive about Saturday night.

(it's pretty bad when you highjack your own threads :D j/k)
